The Hadron Collider
End of the World?
What is the Hadron Collider? It is a tunnel is the shape of a circle, 300 feet below ground.
This circular tunnel is 17 miles long. It cost more than 8 billion dollars to build.
The collider was build to smash two streams of protons together to see what happens. Some scientists
think they might find out more about the big bang theory of how the universe was created. Other scientists think they might
find extra dimensions or "dark matter". Still other scientists think the proton collisions could cause the end of the world!
They think that the collisions will cause tiny black holes that will grow and swallow the planet.
